The ski area of Tignes is directly linked to Val d’Isere forming the Espace Killy a ski area with 300 kms of pistes with plenty of different terrain
For beginners there are nursery slopes at Tignes-le-Lac, Le Lavachet and Val Claret with 5 free ski lifts for both adults and children. Small children are particularly well catered for in the snow kindergartens in Val Claret and Lac.
Tignes has plenty of big red and blue runs for intermediate skiers and is one of the best areas in the world for this sort of skiing. There is the long run down from the top of the Grande Motte at 3456 back to Val Claret, the 1350 meter descent is a real leg burner if you manage it without stopping. Then there is the wonderful wide blue, the Grattalu, perfect for working on your technique. The village is surrounded with intermediate runs meaning most skiers can almost ski back to their door.
For the advanced and expert skiers Tignes has six un-pisted black runs called "naturides", these are still checked by the ski patrol to make sure they are safe. It also has some of the best lift accessible off piste available. As well as the various couloirs and faces there are tree runs to Breviere and Les Boisses.
For freeriders there is the SPOT (Skiing the Powder of Tignes) area for freeride training, with 7 different zones catering for different standards, including an 800m long boardercross course. This is accessed by the old Col des Ves chair. The Freeride Chalet, located at the middle of the SPOT, is a good place to find company if you are on your own.
Safety is a high priority in Tignes and there is an Avalanche Transciever training zone on the banks of the lake and 4 information points, which include an avalanche transceiver check beacon, dedicated to freeriders through out the ski area.
The Nouvelles Glisse Zone in Val Claret has 2 half pipes, one an FIS standard 120 meter, the other a 70 meter for the less experienced and a selection of rails. If you are looking for jumps then you are probably better at the snow park in Val d’Isere easily reach via the Fresse express chair.
Cross country skiers are well catered for with 40 kms of trails located in the valley and up on the Grande Motte.
